Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Jun 30, 2014 11:33 am We are wanting to change our roof tiles as the colour no longer suits our house. We would love to replace with colorbond but unsure of costs...is this expensive? What would be a ballpark figure? (our house is 24 squares). Is there any risks when going from tiles to colorbond (in regards to colorbond not being installed when house was built). If this option is too expensive, we will look at respraying our existing tiles a different colour. Again, does anyone have a ballpark figure on this? Thanks!! Agent009 Re: Changing Roof Tiles (colour) 3Jul 03, 2014 8:53 am If you do a search on the forums, you'll find a couple of threads on the costs of roofing with Colorbond. All you basically do is strip off the old tiles and sarking ( if there is any ), nail down new battens, lay some anticon or similar insulating blanket then sheet the roof with new Colorbond sheeting. You are going from a heavy roof cladding ( tiles are 26kg per sq m ) to a light roof cladding ( Colorbond is 10kg per sq m ) so there are no structural issues you have to worry about. Installing a good insulating blanket will also improve your houses comfort levels in summer. Stewie Interesting I asked this question a while back and was told there are structural issues, specifically related to needing extra ties to hold the frame and roof structure down due to the reduced weight of the roof. This was in Canberra too, not in a cyclone prone area. Re: Changing Roof Tiles (colour) 5Jul 05, 2014 3:30 pm I think someone is jerking your chain AJW. At most the extra ties which are either Pryda Triplegrips or cyclone straps would cost an extra $50 per average roof for the hardware and a first year apprentice about an hour to nail in place. Hardly major structural work unless there is some hidden component to your build I am unaware of that could influence this. Stewie Re: Changing Roof Tiles (colour) 6Jul 05, 2014 10:29 pm The issue as described to me (on this board) was more to do with access to tie the frame to the concrete slab. Obviously roof to frame should be trivial. Not saying your wrong, just repeating the advice I was given here. Re: Changing Roof Tiles (colour) 7Jul 05, 2014 11:24 pm A timber frame should be tied or bolted to the slab anyway regardless of the roof covering. I've never built in a cyclonic area but have never had to install any extra structural components just because it was a metal sheet roof rather than tiles. Stewie Re: Changing Roof Tiles (colour) 9Jul 08, 2014 9:21 pm I got a guy come around who does roof restorations. He said most of my roof requires repointing and won't gurney the roof until that is done. He's going to get back to me with a quote. Anyone got a ballpark figure on this site so I know if the quote is respectable? Cheers Re: Changing Roof Tiles (colour) 10Jul 09, 2014 12:16 pm In Brisbane we had a standard sized 3x2 single level repointed, some tiles replaced, cleaned and painted for $3700 - basically $1300 for the roofing work and then $2400 for the cleaning and painting. Quotes varied between $3500 and $6000. Be aware that it is likely you'll end up with some water getting inside somewhere when they pressure wash. We had a few spots in the ceiling cop a little water and leave staining on the plasterboard that we had to fix later. I don't think there's anything the contractors can do about this. Re: Changing Roof Tiles (colour) 11Jul 16, 2014 2:26 pm We used Queensland Roofing back a couple years ago. They answer questions like this via email. May be best to send them an email sales@queenslandroofing.com.au or go to their website at www.queenslandroofing.com.au. They have a fair bit of info there. We had an issue similar to what you are talking about but we were fairly surprised when we got comprehensive answers from OR via email. Most wouldn't answer questions on the phone. If you don't want to email them you can call them on 1-300-90-20-37 but you can email them with photos etc if you are looking for the price. In the end we used them, we couldn't stuff around too long and they have the history behind them. So........ at some point ypu just gotta bite the bullet. Re: Changing Roof Tiles (colour) 12Jul 16, 2014 3:43 pm I've got two quotes so far. One $4800 and the other $4500. Both said they can offer a bit cheaper if I pay cash (which I will be). If I can get under $4000 it sounds like a pretty good price? How much are you ahead in payments compared to where the build is at? Have you fully drawn down the loan? 5 11933 Hi All, I'm new here!
