Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Jun 21, 2014 12:03 am I am not sure if this is going to make sense, however, with our original draft designs of the upstairs extension, we had it so that the size of the first floor was the same as the ground floor, so the walls on the outside goes straight up. I was advise by the builders that this would cost a lot more than having the extension go inwards (from the outside, you can see tiles on the ground roof). With this in mind and trying to draw up another design for our architect, what is the minimum measurements that you can go inwards from the edge of the ground floor roof. I just want to play around with the designs and measurements before presenting our architect of what we now want because of budget restrictions. Re: Building upstairs - but inwards 2Jun 21, 2014 1:49 pm There is no minimum measurement. Your local council may have restrictions on side setbacks, building envelopes so you may have to step the second level in 1 metre or more to comply. Your council should have guidelines on their website as part of their LEP and DCP. Or call in and ask one of their town planners what you are proposing. We also canterlevered the back out over the backyard to give extra room upstairs.
