Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Jun 04, 2014 9:33 am Hi This is my first post. We are planning a master bedroom/ ensuite addition to the back of our 1970s brick home in western Brissie. Does anyone know of builders who will be accomodating if we source salvage/recycled materials where its cheaper, and if I make sure there are no delays or difficulties with quality? I understand how it can be frustrating for builders in this scenario, and if its more expensive, we won't go there. Thanks Musicmum Re: Extension using recycled/ salvage materials Brisbane 2Jun 04, 2014 11:17 am Been there , done that for a couple of my clients years ago for a renovation. A lot of the things they got cheaply ended up being more expensive by the time we customised them to fit. Windows and doors in particular. If you were doing all the building work yourself then sure you would save a bundle as it is your free labour to enable you to do this There will be a limited amount of recycled materials that you can use without your addition looking like a hotch potch of different things. Where possible you should match any new windows/doors, bricks, cladding, roofing etc with the old and you can't always do this with recycled stuff. There may be limits too on what your council allows you to use secondhand or what the structural engineer will pass. Good luck though. There are a few posts on this forum where people have done this and they would have saved a lot but mostly these are places in the bush that people have built themselves.
