If they are pretty bad I'd remove everything , give it a good clean ( with an approved vacuum ) and install the new. If the ceiling is Ok, I'd just go over the existing insulation with the new as you'd end up with a thicker total layer. Just make sure you follow all the safety precautions and make sure you don;t cover any downlights with the batts. As an aside , do you know what the existing insulation is made from ? Most was made from cotton from memory but some was made from not so eco- friendly material. We got ours vacuumed out and bats put in. It made it easier for the installer and removed alot of vermin droppings.
