Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 May 12, 2014 8:36 am Hi, We have just moved into a 14 year old home. I suffer with asthma and have been finding it hard to breath. The next door neighbour informed me that the previous owners had two large dogs that lived inside night and day. I have had the carpet steam cleaned but still can't get rid of the strong smell of some sort of powder that has been used to conceal the smell. I plan to get new carpet and underlay but my husband wants to wait until the painting has been done. Would it be a silly idea to remove the carpet and get new underlay and just pull it back when the painter comes to do the skirts? He is unable to come for 2 months and I can't keep taking strong meds. Hoping you can help. Re: Stinky carpet 2May 12, 2014 8:51 am If it's that bad, I'd pull up the carpet and underlay and live with the bare floor until the house is repainted and you put in the new carpet. You could easily throw down some rugs in places if you want something soft underfoot in the interim. Completed a knock down and rebuild in northern Melbourne. It's no good having to take strong medication because your asthma is playing up, just get rid of the carpet/underlay, and put up with the temporarily bare concrete or floorboards. I'm guessing once it is back to bare floor, you'll be able to do a much better clean up at your own leisure, rather than the rush of 'rip it up, put the new down straight away'.
