Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Mar 28, 2014 8:17 pm Hi, I'm new here We're about to move into a house we'll need to renovate over the next 12 months (or longer). It's got grotty old (pink) carpet, which I don't want to live in (allergies, baby crawling on the floor etc). I need to at least rip it out in the bedroom before we move in. But I was thinking, rather than spending the money to steam clean it, maybe I could put down a cheap temporary flooring until we're ready to do the floor? Something like lino? Or cheap laminate? Has anyone done something like this, or got any tips? My biggest drawback is that it feels quite wasteful, from an environmental perspective. I'm not sure how much it would cost, but I was thinking around $500 (versus $200-300 for steam cleaning). Any advice welcome Re: Temporary flooring? 2Mar 29, 2014 9:24 am I it a concrete slab or floorboards? If floorboards just rip the carpet out. If concrete floor rip it out (if it's that bad). Go to second hand stores and buy mats. Or look on Gumtree/Ebay and buy some off cuts or second hand carpet. Even Bunnings has room sized carpet for $100 (I think). Sometimes you can get ends of carpet rolls etc. We just sold a unit with 12 month old carpet in it. The new buyer is ripping it out and putting floorboards. Such a waste. Re: Temporary flooring? 3Mar 29, 2014 9:35 am It's a concrete slab, otherwise we'd have loved real floorboards! What kind of mats are you thinking of from second hand stores? Big rugs? I'll also check around for off cuts and second hand carpet. Even though I'm not much of a fan of carpet, but better new carpet than old carpet in terms of kids & allergies. Give it a good vacuum first then for about $50 you can hire a steam cleaner for a day and do it yourself. An hour at most for a unit and you'd have nuked the carpet. Unsure - go over it again. Let it dry for a day. Stewie Re: Temporary flooring? 5Mar 29, 2014 1:30 pm Yep. What stewie said. Rug Doctor is about $40 for 24 hrs. First thing we did - hired at about midday, did the whole house, and redid in the morning. Need to buy some of their extra products though, which was about $20 all up but have some left over for next time. We got out so many stains and marks we thought we'd have no chance at. Much cheaper than getting the professionals in and I really don't think there is much of a difference, if at all. $500 sounds too cheap to me anyway. How much area total are we talking? Re: Temporary flooring? 6Mar 29, 2014 7:05 pm Hmmm main challenge with DIY steam cleaning is I have 3 smalls so I'm not sure I'd be able to get it done in the time frame before we move. Could possibly send hubby. It's a fairly typical 3 by 1 size plus study. This is the vinyl I might use as a temporary measure, maybe just in the bedroom http://www.bunnings.com.au/gerflor-hobb ... l_p6610184 Hi JW I just read your post and I find this situation quite strange.
