Hi everyone, so we've decided to open up our bricked up fireplace so we can put shelving inside and use it as an entertainment unit as the tv is mounted above it.
Our house is an old 1950's SA housing trust home, they used to have little gas heaters in these fireplaces apparently. Luckily both the gas fire and all the gas line have been removed. But we have found a U shaped concrete inset which the heater would have once sat back in. This is surrounded by brick fill on the sides and back.
Just wondering if anybody would have a clue as to wether this concrete inset would be load bearing at all? From what I can tell, it doesn't look like it. But my knowlege of brick walls and structural support only goes so far.. I will try to post some pics or provide a link to them.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks, Tim.
