Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Feb 12, 2014 8:00 pm Hello All First Post I currently have a Jetski which fits just nicely threw my garage door (double garage, 2 single roller doors) Im looking to buy a boat as the wife is getting a bit to old to be climbing back onto the jetski when we fall off, or the kids push her off Climbing back onto a jetski may seem simple if your young and fit but as you mature it gets a lot harder. the problem i seem to be having is all (almost all) skiboats have a beam (width) of 8 feet, but my garage doors are only 7.93 feet wide (so thats an issue), there is a ski boat with a smaller beam (7.5) (speedster 150) however its a discontinued line (seadoo dont make them anymore) and as much as i like the boat im concerned about buying something which may suffer from a ready supply of parts should any be needed. so my question is this, surely a builder can widen one of the doors (by about a brick or so) ? and that would require a row of bricks to be removed, perhaps the 90 degree metal support about the door would need to be lengthened or a longer one bought and a new roller door purchased. so imagine 3 bricks across on the left of the garage, then a roller door, then 3.5 bricks in the middle, then another roller door, then a whole bunch of bricks as the garage is level with the front of the house. is something like this a huge project ? costly ? i just wouldnt want to have a significant cost on top of the purchase price of the boat and apart from modifying the garage door i cant see any other way of resolving this issue, nor am i willing to sell and buy another house. any advice appreciated Re: Making the garage door Wider, what cost to expect 2Feb 12, 2014 10:46 pm how wide is the brick section between the two doors ? It might be more worthwhile to turn two doors in to one, subject to structural engineering needs. If you do one big double door sized panel lift door, then it would make it a whole lot easier to back the boat trailer in to the garage. Can't tell you the costs, but that's what I'd be considering subject to costs and engineering. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld. Re: Making the garage door Wider, what cost to expect 4Feb 13, 2014 4:01 pm the width of the bricks between the 2 doors is about 400mm however im unsure of the one door option as we get a lot of wind and my next door neighbour has a single door on dbl garage and his door has been blown in twice now, so i dont know if thats cheap doors or what is going on but i dont want that to happen i will take some pics cheers Re: Making the garage door Wider, what cost to expect 5Feb 13, 2014 9:18 pm Wow, what sort of winds do you get there ? I'd rip out the central pier and make it one big ( good quality ) door too just for ease of access. There is also this thread further down the list for someone doing exactly that. viewtopic.php?f=53&t=69055 Stewie 1 10119 Dover white or surfmist garage door.
