Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Feb 12, 2014 4:56 pm We are about to start a home renovation on a 1930 home, I want to repoint the mortar as part of the renovation. Should I do this before I start the renovations? We are adding an 2nd level which will be single brick on top of the first floor which is double brick. Re: Repoint pre or post renovation 2Feb 12, 2014 9:31 pm What is the condition of the existing brickwork? If it's generally OK and the pointing is mostly cosmetic, Id say do the pointing after the reno but before you have any side paths laid or landscaping, decks done etc. Re-pointing is a messy business and it will also depend on whether you are going to hit the bricks after with a pressure jet and HCL or just do a hand clean with the acid and water. The pressure jet tends to blast bits of mortar far and wide. If you are repainting windows in those walls I'd do the re-point first then the cleaning then the painting. If it's in poor condition I'd do the brickwork first just so you know what you are up for structurally.
