Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Jan 27, 2014 10:47 am We are extensively renovating our house in ACT and I need some advice on creating a new bathroom stud wall with a recessed shaving cabinet. The shaving cabinet that we are recessing is 1200mm x 720mm x 1500mm. As the stud wall thickness is 90mm, plaster 10mm and tile with adhesive is 10mm that is a total of 110mm, this means the shaving cabinet would be sticking out aprox. 40mm (including mirrored doors). We want to build the wall out the extra 30mm or so (sorry don't have the door measurements) to sit flush will the shaving cabinet, then only the doors will be sticking out from the wall. Do we simply attach 30mm of pine on each stud of the wall to gain the extra space or is there another way to do this? Also this runs a long the wall where the shower is, so I guess we continue it the full length of the wall and loose the 30 mm or so from the shower too? Hope I explained it well enough Thanks, D Re: Recessed shaving cabinet - Bathroom 2Jan 27, 2014 1:40 pm Not sure whats the proper way to do it but I guess I would just cut some 30mm thick strips of timber and then just attach the plaster sheets on to these. If there is no heavy tiles going on to them I don't think anything fancy needs to be done. I would think if you do it you would need to do it right across too, so losing the room in the shower too. However we are doing floor to roof tiling with 450mm x 450mm porcelain tiles. So do you think there is some reinforcing or something needed? And if so how would be go about that? Re: Recessed shaving cabinet - Bathroom 4Jan 28, 2014 2:45 pm Ill be doing the same thing in about a month or so with 600x600 tiles. Because they are so heavy and all your really attaching them to is a sheet of paper that could rip off so easily.. I would think you need to do it a bit different. I was going to look in to it more before I go ahead.. but I'm guessing if I use cement sheet instead and make sure there is lots of nails and noggins it will be fine. That's just a guess though Our 1970's reno viewtopic.php?f=53&t=65931 Re: Recessed shaving cabinet - Bathroom 5Jan 30, 2014 7:46 am No battening a wall out with 30 - 40mm strips is fine. Glue them on with good construction adhesive and use 75mm screws or nails every 300mm and you could hang an anvil off that wall and it still wouldn't move. Any noggins in that wall I'd batten those out too - same for the top and bottom plates. Just make sure any plumbing fittings in the wall like the shower head and taps have nogs that are set at the correct depth or at least tell the plumber that you intend battening that wall when he comes to do the rough-in. Stewie Re: Recessed shaving cabinet - Bathroom 6Jan 30, 2014 9:20 pm Thanks Stewie, that information is very useful. As it is an internal wall we are going to batten the wall behind the bathroom as it is a WIR and we are not hanging cupboards on the wall. So no issues about weight etc. Hi Stuey, think you’ve got a couple of options here you’d just need to decide your preference/which options suits best. You could recess the windows (just keep in… 1 3968 Render your bathroom walls, two opinions versus the one, makes you wonder. 3 6046 |
