Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Jan 01, 2014 7:42 am Hi and Happy New Year! I'm new to this forum and just wondering if anyone could advise if there is an easy way to determine what the render is in a house? We are looking at purchasing a home and it is rendered but needs some maintenance (hopefully just reprinting). The house was built about 8 years ago, what would the render most likely be made of? I've read about cement render, fibro(?) etc but don't really know much about the different methods, if anyone has a good resource for this kind of thing that would be very helpful If it is coloured render can you paint over it or would you need to replace it completely to change the colour? Apologies for silly question, my previous homes have been either brick or solid stone so not dealt with render before! Re: Painted vs coloured render? 2Jan 01, 2014 10:15 am Yes you can paint over render to change the colour, just give it a good pressure washing first. The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: Painted vs coloured render? 3Jan 01, 2014 5:44 pm If it is coloured render, you should consult the manufacturer as you may need some sort of primer to etch it. To tell the difference, chip a bit off and see if colour goes through the grain. Cement and sand render is much finer than coloured render. Coloured render is a bit rubbery to touch. Coloured render is also a little harder to patch Re: Painted vs coloured render? 4Jan 02, 2014 8:07 am Thanks guys, I'll try to take a look if we go and see the house again - unfortunately it's not ours (yet) and so not sure I can chip any off to take a peek, but will see if there are any convenient existing chips that might give us a look inside. The house would have been rendered when it was built 8-10 years ago so not sure who the manufacturer would have been. I'm kind of hoping it's just painted as that seems like it would be easier to change the colour and make any repairs! Thanks for your help, Re: Painted vs coloured render? 5Jan 14, 2014 8:06 am It doesn't really matter if it's coloured render. We had coloured render but they still applied a layer of paint the same colour over it. We had the scratch finish. Never touched it in 12 years. Loved it (we sold the house). Re: Painted vs coloured render? 6Jan 14, 2014 7:41 pm Hi Travelbug, thanks, that's good to know - glad you liked your shiny new painted render! I've not had a rendered house before and so good to know the options as many of the places we're looking to buy need some renovation/maintenance and we're a bit clueless as to what can be done with the different types of render... Good to know it's still possible to change it even if it's coloured render rather than painted Hi Alex, Thanks for the reply again. I had a chat with the builder, he said he will use primer, then hydrotec which comes with colour and sealer as well.
