Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Nov 30, 2013 8:58 am I'm after some advice - we are currently renovating our apartment and are re-doing the kitchen. We have had both plumbers and electricians doing their thing.. the electricians came recently and accidently drilled into three different water pipes. Luckily we were able to turn the water off without too much damage but I wanted to know who was liable to pay for the repairs? Thanks! Re: Electrician drilled into water pipes 4Dec 02, 2013 2:15 pm Drill interuptors (spelling?) are available for this very reason. I really can't understand why more tradies don't use them. Surely it would save them heaps in terms of repairs or insurance? http://camdenbuild.blogspot.com.au/ by invite only please pm me Re: Electrician drilled into water pipes 6Dec 03, 2013 11:58 am Quote: Drill interuptors (spelling?) are available for this very reason. Close Robbie55, "Drill Interupters" ( you must have gone to the same english class as me ). I spoke with a guy about six months ago who had bought one and he said it was good but not infallible. If he is drilling into masonry, pushing hard and hits a pipe the box will cut the power but with his weight behind the drill , by the time it cuts out he has usually damaged the pipe too much to just leave it if it hasn't started leaking already. I guess it would buy you time and you wouldn't flood the room either until the plumber got there at least. You're right though, they would still be worth buying. IStewie Totally agree, also consider a lot of tradies are using cordless hammer drills. I have a 36volt cordless impact drill and wouldn't use anything else. Sometimes pipes in old houses take strange directions and its near impossible to know where they are in a brick wall. In this case I will approach my customer before drilling, ask them if they know where the pipes are and then politely explain it will be all care and no responsibility. Exactly what I used to do CE when doing renos for people. If we did the framing I'd draw a sketch with all the measurements of the pipes and wires in the walls before we re=gyprocked it so we knew exactly where not to drill afterwards. Same with a brick wall before rendering but if you are operating blind then shift the responsibility back to the owner.
