Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Aug 26, 2013 2:02 pm Hi all, Our bathroom is structurally sound but hideous in design – yellow painted walls, pink highlights and white wall tiles with a textured flowery design on some (but not all) of the tiles. The house originally dates from the 1940s, so these tiles were applied over the top of the original ones. We had an asbestos inspection a few months back that suggested both the walls themselves and the original tiles likely contain asbestos – meaning our willingness to remove the top layer is low. So my question is – can I sand down the texture on the tiles and tile paint over the top and get a decent result? Re: Tile paint over textured wall tiles 2Aug 26, 2013 8:36 pm The surface will resist sanding a lot because it is a glaze, also dont sand if there is any question of asbestos, however the surface can be safely painted. Hope this helps @builderforlife Building inspector and passionate about construction When you need an expert to take a look. Re: Tile paint over textured wall tiles 3Aug 27, 2013 11:10 am Agreed, I wouldn't sand. I have seen glazed tiles (unsanded) painted and for a quick, cheap alternative they looked a lot better than what was originally there. Not sure how long the paint will last before it looses connectivity to the glossy tiled surface though.. Re: Tile paint over textured wall tiles 4Aug 27, 2013 11:16 am We did a small reno on our bathroom for our rental property, I wouldn't recommend painting the floor tiles, but the wall tiles have come up surprisingly good. They have all sorts of tile paints available from Masters/Bunnings and as long as the tile is clean of soap scum and silicon you shouldn't have a problem. Reseal area's like shower screens and bath strips because if water gets under the paint, it'll eventually start to peel. Re: Tile paint over textured wall tiles 5Dec 01, 2013 7:02 am I have the same issue with wanting to paint over my textured wallvtiles but in the kitchen. My question is, if I paint over them, and later need to clean them eg from kitchen grease, how might it stand up to being rubbed over for cleaning? Re: Tile paint over textured wall tiles 6Dec 01, 2013 7:33 am With a mixture of plain and patterend it won't look so good (in my opinion). If it's a cheap property though it may surfice for a few years. It's already got 2 layers of tiles so it might be time to bite the bullet and get a new bathroom. Don't let asbestos stop you.
