Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Sep 16, 2013 9:52 am We live in an inner city Brisbane suburb, diagonally opposite a 1st floor office that has a deck out onto the road. The staff use this deck almost nightly and often till late at night, drinking and generally being loud - much like the noise you would expect in a busy pub. We have tried various measures to get this company to behave in a more socially responsible manner but to no avail. Unfortunately our main bedroom faces the street and despite putting in new windows with 8.5mm sound insulating glass, we are still disturbed by the noise. The next option I guess is to try a noise barrier product like Green Glue or Acoustiblok. So I have some questions. The house is a Queenslander with the original VJ walls in the bedroom and a 3.2m high ceiling. Are products like the one I mentioned above likely to provide effective isolation against the noise I have described? As this will be a retro-fit I am wondering whether I could leave the walls in place and install the Acoustiblok over the existing VJs and then add the plasterboard. Alternatively use the 2 plasterboard Green Glue sandwich over the existing VJs? The bedroom in over the garage. Will I need to insulate the space between the floor and the garage? With regard to the roof space, what product would be best to use and would it need to be installed in the whole area or just above the bedroom? Many thanks TOny Re: Sound Barrier/insulation advice please 2Sep 16, 2013 1:42 pm This link here will point you in the right direction. http://www.soundproofingcompany.com/ It is a US based company but all their info is relevant even if a few of the products aren't. There are also some similar threads in the Heating, Cooling & Insulation section. viewforum.php?f=20 You may have to scroll down a fair way to find them. The best solution in my opinion is to strip the walls internally and install sound insulation batts between the studs first then go down the route you mention. Stewie Re: Sound Barrier/insulation advice please 4Sep 16, 2013 9:01 pm If your budget will stretch, and as you are planning 2 sheets of plasterboard, try using denser Fire Rated board, 1 sheet 13mm, another of 16mm. The dissimilar thicknesses broaden the frequency range for isolation. Seal all gaps, even along the sheet edges. Green Glue make an affordable sealant as well. Adding a layer to just the bedroom ceiling will help, plus sealing all gaps. Rockwool up above maybe? That "might" be better than using Green Glue. Re: Sound Barrier/insulation advice please 6Sep 27, 2013 9:12 am OKay, so I have done some more homework and have concluded that the best way to proceed is to remove the Vj's on 2 external walls, fill with batts, and then use fyrcheck gyprock 13 and 16mm joined with GreenGlue. Also use batts in the roof cavity. I was thinking of using Pink SOnobatts Premium R3 for the walls and the ceiling - they have a 32kg/m3 density. But then I heard that you can get 50kg/m3 density batts - Rockwool? Can someone please advise as to the best combination wall/ceiling. I also want a good thermal insulation as it is the hottest room in the house! Thanks Re: Sound Barrier/insulation advice please 7Sep 27, 2013 11:09 am Residential Rockwool from Bradford has a new name and it's own website. New Generation Soundscreen. http://www.soundscreen.com.au Depends on the wall cavity, but 90mm has R2.5, their 110mm, normally for Floor and ceiling, is R3.1. Their site shows improved Sound Isolation for the New Gen.. I’m not a structural engineer but I’m free. you still need an engineer for the plans.
