Protecting balcony vertical support beams when cladding

Hi,

I am wanting to add a storage room under a wooden balcony. In cladding between the vertical timber support beams I need to protect the support beams and not hammer hundreds of nails in to the verticals.
I need some advice on how to add timber to the verticals to then nail the horizontal cladding timber onto.

Thank you

THanks , l got a licensed building inspector to look at the rust, he said its just surface rust and it would take many years to become a problem because the beams are so…
