Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Sep 04, 2013 12:18 pm I am trying to choose exterior paint colours for an older Spanish style house (yes, it has arches!). We are limited by three things: the house style, the roof is red terracotta, and the garage doors are Colorbond woodland grey. I would like a more contemporary/warmer look than the white we currently have, but am wondering whether other colours will look strange with the style/roof colour/garage. Thinking about colours like Dulux Beige Royal, Dune, Paperbark, Buff it, Limed white..... Any comments or suggestions for a new exterior colour scheme would be appreciated. Re: colour update for spanish style house 2Sep 04, 2013 2:54 pm Recently I saw the movie Jobs & admired "Jackling House" (or the house the filmmakers used to fill in for that house) which was a Spanish revival mansion he lived in from the mid-80's to mid-90's (and later, controversially, demolished - but that's another, lengthy story). The style of architecture certainly is unique. It'd maybe also be nice to tie the outside to the inside of your house by doing some colorful, patterned tiling. I would think if you went with a "warmer" but still pale colour as your base for the exterior of the house it would look a bit more contemporary (anything with beige or yellow tones) than a stark white. Have a scroll through some images on this website http://www.houzz.com/Spanish-revival/ for ideas. Hope that helps Re: colour update for spanish style house 3Sep 05, 2013 10:56 am Thanks for the feedback re colour. The link you provided has some great sources of inspiration. I'm still bogged down in colour choices, but feeling happier about moving away from white. Problem is the visualisation software I am using from Dulux seems to give totally different colours on our house image compared to the actual colour - so hard to visualise what it's going to look like. Re: colour update for spanish style house 4Sep 05, 2013 11:01 am Maybe get some sample pots of the colours you are interested in and just paint a bit of wall in an out of the way place (eg near the fence or on the rear of the home). Visualisation programs are difficult as they don't give you a realistic idea of how the colour will look in different light conditions (sunlight, low light, artificial light etc). Feel free to post some pics if you want feedback. Re: colour update for spanish style house 6Sep 06, 2013 7:57 am Unless you have a calibrated system using software that matches up your computer, screen and printer, what you see on screen will definitely be not what you get if you print it out. Then there is the differences of RGB ( screen ) vs CMYK ( printer ). I have an older CAD system running on an ancient Mac ( in computing terms anyway ) and while I can get a good looking 3D model on screen, when I print it out there are noticeable colour shifts. I've played around on an upmarket system that was calibrated and the images we printed were exactly what we saw on screen. The visualisation programs are good for an overall feel to a house but when you are trying to nail down the exact colours nothing beats real paint on a real wall. As grom40 says light has a big effect on the colour so I always recommend to my clients to use sample paints on darker sides of the house in shade as well as in full sun. The bigger the sample you can paint on your walls the better too. Stewie Re: colour update for spanish style house 7Sep 06, 2013 11:06 am Thanks Stewie. I'm finding that even before printing, the colour sample in the visualisation program looks totally different on the screen image of my house. I will be trying some sample pots on the walls as soon as possible. The Dulux colour consultants are awesome. If you show them the photos they should be able to figure it out for you straight away 1 1661 welcome to learning that colours vary in different lighting conditions. 1 2938 Thankyou so much 😀 I've decided on White on white for doors and trims, White on white 50% on ceiling and Mt buller for walls. Fingers crossed it will look OK 😀 2 7299 |
