Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Aug 26, 2013 5:41 pm A friend of mine is thinking of replacing the concrete tiles on his 25 year old home, built on a slab with Colorbond. Location in Canberra. One of the guys that he called to quote refused to even look at it because it was very costly to properly. The reason being Colorbond on a slab requires the frame to be better tied to the slab. He then went on to say that with a concrete tile roof the weight of the tiles keeps the frame in place with less robust ties and if using Colorbond the weight is less hence the frame needs to be better tied to the slab. To retrofit the means a lot of (expensive) cuts to Gyproc and repair. So the question is this true or false? Re: Replace concrete tiled roof with Colorbond 2Aug 26, 2013 6:30 pm Thanks for the answer, much appreciated. The guy my friend called didn't come to look, just said over the phone a blanket no too hard, he has another guy coming to look in a week or so's time so will be interesting to see what he reckons. Re: Replace concrete tiled roof with Colorbond 3Aug 26, 2013 6:49 pm I'd say the guy quoting the re roof is spot on. Roof tiles weigh around 60kg per m2 versus colorbond at 7kg m2 (roughly from the top of my head) Basiclly, it is indeed this weight that they factor in that it wont lift as easy in a storm. I can almost guarantee that that the tiedown wouldnot be sufficient as nobody usually throws $2000 worth of overkill fixings/tiedown into a house Dont waste your money on an engineer, a good carpenter/builder should be able to assess your house, and would likely do it for free if they thought they were going to get some work out of it. The inspection may even need to be fairly invasive to asses properly anyway, so if you plan to do it, budget for the worst. If this other guy thats quoting doesnt consider it, I would be worried. be very weary if this other guy gives a cheaper price on the assumpton everythings good. Re: Replace concrete tiled roof with Colorbond 5Oct 20, 2013 7:19 pm So what is the significance of the house being built on a slab compared to a house on peers? Would that make a difference, as I have seen many older fibro homes get rennovated with colorbond roofs when previously they had tiled roofs. Your house roof does not show rusting other than some surface rust on the flashings. In my opinion you dont need to replace or paint the roof other than treat surface rust… 1 10248 No, I even have sections of narrowness where the tiles won't slide up any further.
