Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Jun 14, 2013 9:34 am Hoping to get some advice – Cannot get a straight answer from City of Port Phillip (vic) if we need a building permit or not. In nut shell we are looking to renovate out bathroom, it the renovation we are looking to switch the position of the toilet & bath. The sewer outlet/ pipe would be moved appox. 2 meters, It is very convoluted to what is/ isn’t structural. No walls/ windows will be moved. However the whole bathroom will be replastered/ waterproofed & tiled. Any advice would be greatly appreciated - getting a permit seems unnecessary & expensive. Side note: we area extended our house, however this is a still in planning so is about 4 months until construction starts – so we are looking for a project to do in the meantime. Thanks Re: Building Permit of Bathroom Renovation 2Jun 14, 2013 11:49 am Jiminy. That is such a minor reno I am surprised the council even thought about it. No walls or windows to move means none of your neighbours will be affected either. Stewie Re: Building Permit of Bathroom Renovation 3Jun 14, 2013 5:52 pm I NSW you don't need council permission. I'd say it would be the same. Inside for anything usually doesn't need permission. We've ripped out heaps of walls for renos without permission. Re: Building Permit of Bathroom Renovation 4Jun 14, 2013 6:46 pm in QLD you no longer need to apply, but your plumber needs to lodge a form 4 to declare the work has been done properly. apparently they audit 1 in 4. stop asking about the building work and ask about the plumbing side of changes as they will more than likely care about this Re: Building Permit of Bathroom Renovation 6Jun 24, 2013 7:43 am I agree that you don't need a permit to carry out minor work. My only reservation is re-sale value. When a prospective purchaser checks the plans at council and sees that the house isn't the same they may be put off. Maybe you need something from council in writing to say that you don't need to have approval for your specific project. Maybe you need something from council in writing to say that you don't need to have approval for your specific project. Council doesn't have plans of the inside of your house. Plans show an outline of a house on the land.
