Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 May 19, 2013 4:29 pm Hi, Long time lurker here. I've just bought a nicely renovated 1950's weatherboard house in the northern suburbs of Melbourne. One thing they didn't do when they renovated was add any built in robes. It is a 4BR house (soon to be 3) with no built in robes at all. We have plans to build a walk in robe and ensuite and do a few things, but that may be a while away. In the meantime, we'd like to add built in robes to one of the bedrooms as soon as we can after moving in. Can anyone give a rough estimate of what it would cost, and/or recommend someone in my area to do the work? The wall where they would go on is 3.7m long, but we may need to leave some space near the door, so the length of the BIR's may be about 3m. There are high ceilings, we'd probably like to add another cupboard up there as the house has very little storage. It has been renovated quite nicely, so we'd like quality workmanship, and a style that would match. Any rough estimates would be great (e.g. $2K, $4K etc.). At this stage we're thinking and hoping we can do it for around $2k. Here is a pic of the bedroom in question so you can see predict the type of finish we'd need (BIR's would go on the wall opposite the window) Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Built in Robes - Cost Estimate and Recommendations 2May 20, 2013 9:29 am It really depends on the type of door you want and the quality of construction. Mirrored sliding robes are the cheapest and nastiest available and would cost from $1800 upwards. With proper doors and full internals it could cost any ware from $2500 - $4000 depending on the style and finish you go for. That's the information I was after. I have another question. This room that we're going to put built in robes into initially is the largest bedroom. On the other side of the wall where we would like to put BIR's, there is a smaller bedroom (3.7 x 3.5), also with no BIR's. Is it feasible to 'build' in the BIR's into the larger bedroom, then provide half of the space to BIR's to 1 bedroom, and half to the other? So that, for example, both bedrooms will have doors on the left nhalf of the wall, accessing the robes behind. Is this feasible? Cost effective? And is it something that's done often? I'm concerned that adding BIR's to the smaller bedroom will result in a room that's uncomfortably small. Thanks Re: Built in Robes - Cost Estimate and Recommendations 4May 21, 2013 12:39 pm smokyjoe Perfect. That's the information I was after. I have another question.
