Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Apr 14, 2013 7:45 am We have a short but long (1 x ~12m) steel skillion roof that is on the other side of the wall from our bed and is very noisy when it rains. Does anyone have any ideas on how to reduce the noise? I've got a few ideas but have no details or plans at this stage. The entire room is quite noisy in stormy weather so I have thought of removing all the plaster board and starting again with plenty of insulation then lining the room with 7mm ply followed by sound proofing plaster board. Changing the roofing material to something that will absorb more noise, I was thinking of the system that the Southern Californian use, a vinyl type product. Maybe some sort of shade structure instead of changing the roofing material might work. Re: How to silence a noisy metal roof? 2Apr 14, 2013 8:18 am I should add that the sound is coming through the wall rather than the roof as the roof in question is above the kitchen below and at about the same level as the bedrooms floor level. It covers a one meter setback from a build to boundary difference between the ground and first floors. Re: How to silence a noisy metal roof? 3Apr 14, 2013 9:36 am Google or consult an insulation specialist for sound-deadening wall insulation and thermal/sound roof blankets. Plus super-check or sound-check gyprock, although I have had no personal experience with it. In both cases it will be a mammoth job requiring 'starting again' with the walls and lifting the roof, which is probably what you were told over on Whirlpool. Arfur Re: How to silence a noisy metal roof? 4Apr 14, 2013 10:09 am Thanks Arfur, I got 'acoustic de-coupling' from whirlpool. Its likely to be a big job but now I'm a step in the right direction in doing it right. I think it was 'sound-check gyprock' that I was thinking about. A previous neighbour had used it or something like it with good results to construct a common wall in the roof space between two old semi's. Re: How to silence a noisy metal roof? 5Apr 15, 2013 8:30 am If the noise was solely from the rain hitting the metal roof, perhaps two coats of a waterproofing membrane would deaden the noise. Thanks for that, I hadn't thought of a membrane or coating. I wonder if there is any specific sound proofing coating that can be applied? Any coating that could be used would need to be more about dissipating the sound from the droplets impact rather than the transmission of sound through the roofing material. The roof is a corrugated Colourbond type product and I wonder how a coating would affect the existing finish although older roofs are often refinished? I'm not aware of a coating designed specifically for soundproofing, but with a membrane being a thick rubberised type of product this would more than likely deaden the noise quite well. With regard to how this would affect the existing finish, it would basically protect the metal as well. The question is if the colorbond has been painted or if it is a pre-fab powder coating. If it is was painted, no primer//undercoat would be required. Preparation would be to wash the surface with sugar soap, followed by light sanding and thorough removal of dust. Then application of two coats of membrane. If it was powder coated we would normally recommend washing, sanding and dusting, followed by 1 coat of a 3 in 1 primer, sealer, undercoat. Then two coats of membrane. This is what I would recommend if you were to choose this method: http://www.colormaker.com.au/products/a ... sportscote Re: How to silence a noisy metal roof? 8Mar 09, 2014 10:57 pm Thanks to everyone who has replied. Just for the hell of it and for anyone else that may use the search function with a similar problem we have fixed the problem. The skillion roof abuts the bedroom wall at about 700mm above floor level and there was only the 10mm gyprock between us and the underside of the roof. We've removed the gyprock and boxed in the the outer gap with flooring material. The wall was insulated with CSR sound proof insulation and covered over with normal gyprock. Why don't people insulate properly from the start? http://www.gyprock.com.au/Pages/Solutio ... Noise.aspx Re: How to silence a noisy metal roof? 9Mar 28, 2014 9:17 pm I don't know if your problem was solved, but I had this same problem and I was searching about it in the internet when I came across this. I used the waterproof coating and I can happily say that the noise reduced to a great extent. It has not gone completely but it has reduced to a great extent. And I am planning to get a full house renovation this year and along with that I will probably change my roofing too. I am planning to change it to shingle roofing from metal as it suits the oakville climate. Anyways thanks for the help though indirectly. Hi, I have a double and whenever the wind picks up I can hear alot of banging in certain areas of the house. I've had a look round and can't see any obvious issue but… 0 10649 DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair Thanks Chippy . Did also see a YouTube video before. Removed them .
