Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Apr 10, 2013 9:26 pm Hi all, We are planning to do install a small extension to our house. We are keen to extend this To the boundary of our land. On this boundary a wall from the neighbouring house is situated. This wall has a standard wooden weatherboard outside finish. If we build a fire wall on the boundary, almost flush to the weatherboard wall of next doors house, what are the suggestion we do to the weather boards next door to ensure their long term integrity is in place. This is because they cannot be replaced or painted anymore. Should we replace them with plastic weather boards, paint them well? Or are there some other options that makes good sense. Keen to get some advise, Jaco Re: Building boundary next to weatherboard house 2Apr 10, 2013 11:36 pm Have you got approval yet? If I was the neighbor I would raise merry hell against your proposal. Arfur Re: Building boundary next to weatherboard house 3Apr 15, 2013 10:18 pm Consult with your neighbours first. It make it all so much smoother. That is if they don't complain about the new extension. We have a smiliar issue with our new wall on our boundary only 150mm off their wall. Luckily it is just their garage though. We have been making some deals with them about their new build so we are all happy. Re: Building boundary next to weatherboard house 4Apr 16, 2013 7:29 am In your case Bella I would be concerned about the 150mm gap between parapet walls with mortar build-up during construction and other air-born rubbish, leaves and the like, building up in the gap absorbing moisture and over time keeping the walls damp and even transferring it through the wall Arfur Re: Building boundary next to weatherboard house 5Apr 16, 2013 8:02 am We have a weatherboard garage wall that is 150mm off boundary and faces into our neighbours back yard. Our neighbours don't want to build up to the wall but I still feel like a turtle on its back having a weatherboard wall inaccessible in somebody else's back yard. If I could go back I would insist that the wall be made out of brick. (I did question the designer at the time but she told me the wall would be fibro cement, which it isn't.) And if my neighbour came and asked me if they could extend back to the boundary I'd probably be looking to replace our garage wall with bricks. I don't know if this helps Re: Building boundary next to weatherboard house 6Apr 16, 2013 9:13 am Thanks for the heads up Arfur. Do you have any suggestions about how to prevent the moisture build up?
