Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Feb 25, 2013 9:47 pm Hi, We are thinking of purchasing a unit in a 1974-ish development. The development is a multi-unit apartment block 3 storey high with ground floor being allocated for garages and the upper 2 stories are resy. Please see the attached plan of the unit. We'd like to alter current layout a little bit. At the moment the kitchen is separated from L+D by laundry and 2 walls. Each wall is one brick thick. We'd like to get rid of the walls and open up the space. Washing machine will either stay in the kitchen or go to the bathroom. 1) Is there a chance the walls in questions are load bearing? 2) In case the walls are load bearing could we support the load with the lintel resting on either side if the span? Any advice would be appreciated Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Cheers Lex Re: New Opening Through Brick Wall 2Feb 26, 2013 8:33 pm In multi-storey apartment blocks of that age units are mostly of the same/similar design consequently the walls would be load bearing, however once you get serious about alterations an engineer will be able to advise you.
