I have raised the ceiling height by bolting down all the rafters to the top plates on both sides with 8mm steel angle brackets and bolting on a collar tie (kiln dried hardwood) higher than the original ceiling joist, which as you can see in the pic, was 2 pieces of oregon nail plated together. As you can see in the photos, the rafters are spaced at approx 1500mm centres, the distance from the wall sheet to the collar tie is 1200mm and the collar tie spans 3100mm. Also, there are no trusses on either end. I was thinking of putting noggins where the red lines are in both images, but am also concerned about the added weight of the 30 or more pieces of structural pine I'd be adding in... Can anyone give me any advice?! Re: Garage ceiling framing 2Feb 14, 2013 3:03 pm It seems you have raised the bottom chord of the trusses to lift your proposed ceiling height? Rather than use heaps more timber trimmers which may compound your problem, why not use furring channel? Its strong and lightweight Arfur Re: Garage ceiling framing 3Feb 17, 2013 10:36 am Thanks for your reply! Yeah, I wanted to raise the ceiling as the bottom chord was really low, also it was two pieces nail plated together... Have just looked at furring channel and it looks like the better way to go, but will I be able to use it on the sides too, considering they are pitched and not flat? After investigating the furring channel I think fixing the brackets direct to the framing ie. rafters is the way to go. What do you think? Re: Garage ceiling framing 4Feb 17, 2013 2:26 pm Its hard to tell from your pics but if you run (and fix) your furring channel across the rafters you may need to suspend some support mid span from the purlins, but your gyprock or furring channel supplier will be able to advise. Its not unusual for gang-nail trusses to have the botton chord with joins. Arfur Re: Garage ceiling framing 6Apr 14, 2013 1:08 pm A bit of an update... I decided to install two trusses between each existing truss, bringing the trusses to roughly 450-500 centres and eliminating the need for furring channel. This way I will be fixing the gyprock directly to the bottom of the trusses. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ About to leave work to go home and add in web members. I am thinking of a modified queenpost truss, without the king post in the middle. Roof trusses are always made with triangles, as they are the strongest structure in nature [1] and you have removed these with the modifications. If you're not in a cyclone prone region though it might not matter so much. It cost $750 in materials and labour and took me and a builder mate 1 day to knock up. I got two quotes from builders and both suggested doing it this way. Do you think it would've been easier with the furring channel? sbryzak I would personally be worried about the strength of your new design.
