Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Jan 03, 2013 12:58 pm Hi All, Our extension is well underway but we have found out that the bricks in our current house are no longer available so we have had to try and find the nearest matching brick. The original bricks were Nubrik Cameo Grey and the ones we have selected for the extension are Austral Greythorn. The two are pictured below side by side (the old bricks are on the right): http://i1160.photobucket.com/albums/q487/fozzy29/newandoldbricks-small_zpsacc4027c.jpg I've been cleaning the old bricks that were demolished because I had originally thought that it would be best to use some of them to blend into the new bricks, but now I'm not so sure and I am wondering what people's thoughts are on reusing old bricks. I think the base color of the original bricks is pretty close to the color of the new bricks, but the original bricks have more of a blend of different colors so that is why I thought it might be good to use some of them to blend with the new ones. My main concern is that the original bricks have tumbled edges while the new bricks have straight edges, so I now think it might be a bit weird to combine the two in the one wall. Here are the two walls where the new bricks will intersect with the old: http://i1160.photobucket.com/albums/q487/fozzy29/newwall1-small_zps07223991.jpg http://i1160.photobucket.com/albums/q487/fozzy29/newwall2-small_zpsb5903bb2.jpg Just wondering whether people think I should try and blend some of the old bricks with the new, or whether I am better to just use the new bricks? Re: Reusing Bricks in an Extension 2Jan 14, 2013 12:04 pm Where possible use all new or all old on the same wall. It is of course not always possible. On some of the renos and extensions for clients I've done over the years we would use all new on say just the back wall and use some of the old to patch around existing doors and windows. Sometimes on a side wall we have helped to hide the change in bricks by installing a downpipe over the join. Stewie Re: Reusing Bricks in an Extension 3Jan 14, 2013 12:15 pm Hi, Stewie's advice was what our Bricklayer suggested as well. Use all new and then cover the join with a down pipe. viewtopic.php?t=62083 Re: Reusing Bricks in an Extension 4Jan 15, 2013 4:43 pm Thanks for the replies. I think it makes sense to just use either all new or all old bricks on the same wall. Since we won't have enough old bricks for a whole wall and since the extension is three new walls that join to the existing walls at an angle I'm best off just using the new bricks even though they don't match the existing.
