Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Jan 03, 2013 10:28 am Hi all, We are looking at doing an extension, currently just seeing what is possible. Having a little trouble sorting out how to do the roof with one of the designs. The current house is an "L" shape with a tiled gable roof: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ We are looking at filling in the empty part of th "L" with a 2 storey addition: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ However I don't really want to leave it as a gable roof going into the extension, the valley just seems too risky for water. So what we are looking at doing is replacing the roof, probably with Colourbond so that we can use smaller angles. Here is a blank canvas without any roof: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Can anyone suggest how you would go about roofing that, with a few considerations. - The roof line should be below the windows on the second story. - We don't care if it's tiled, colorbond, hip, cable or other. Thanks! Re: Roof design advice 2Jan 05, 2013 5:45 pm Not knowing existing floor plan or orientation, this could have some/a lot/no influence over the roof design but here's a couple of simple examples. I would possibly hip the ends of the main roof as well, might not really work over that span and angle though. I worked out the roof needs to be around 10 - 12 degrees to end up under the windows. Just wondering if that would complicate the trusses too much. Maybe you would just go traditional without trusses for that kind of roof though? I need to do some research on how hip roofs are constructed! Re: Roof design advice 6Jan 07, 2013 8:30 am No all that could be achieved by using trusses but I think you'd find going the traditional roofing way may be cheaper in your case. Also , don't make your clearance under the windows too small as you need about 150mm upturn for roof flashings. Edit : I was going to say also that as per PAB_34's excellent sketch that the min pitch for a Colorbond roof is 5-6º. Personally I don't like going less than 10º because of problems around valleys and flashings. Also if you are looking at installing a skylight over the existing part of your house then a Velux can't be installed in a less than 15º roof without a special flashing which look pretty crappy. Stewie Re: Roof design advice 7Jan 15, 2013 10:30 pm * Go with the hip. * Match the pitch of the existing roof. * The more roof space the better. It helps with heat loading. * Replacing the exsting roof for the sake of avoiding box gutters seems an unnecessary expense. Re-plan the second storey to take advantage of where the existing ridge line of the lower roof is sitting. Try to have it terminate against the new wall. Mario Thank you so much for the effort. We will use it to talk with builder.
