Step 3 - Measure up that area and sketch it up. Step 4 - Calculate the total floor area you want to add, multiple that number by $2000 - $2500 and decide if that cost is acceptable. If not, use your budget number, divide by 2-2.5k and that's the floor area you can afford to add. If funds aren't a problem and you have a 'character' house then an architect may be a good idea, otherwise I'd just go to a couple of small custom builders and enquire if they do renovations (most do, especially in a slower economy). Either one, ask to see a folio of their work on houses of a similar style to yours, from there it's up to you as to work type of work they can do for you.
