Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Dec 20, 2012 2:01 pm It's strange that very few post talk about first floor/second story addition. Is it simply cost too much, people rather do KDR? Anyway my existing house is a 100sqm brick veneer house sitting on ~80cm high brick piers. I plan to add one story up with exact same shape and size, being brick veneer too. I actually got the initial DA approved by council. From what I find out, the extension can cost $2000~$2500 per sqm and I am still having problem finding reputable builder for it. Has anybody in Sydney had similar situation and would like to share their experience? With the cost so high, is it a better idea to demolish the existing house to last brick wall and rebuild exact same house? Looks like builders much prefer to work with new home than renovating. PS: due to site constraint it's way too difficult to change the existing building footprint. Re: Cost of first floor/second story addition in Sydney 2Dec 20, 2012 3:32 pm I live in an older area and a few neighbours looked into building on top but all said price was prohibitive. They knocked their houses down and rebuilt. They said at the end of the day it's still an old house builtupon. When for similar money you can get a brand new home. Of course you need to take rent etc into account. But you can sell lots of the old house to recoup demolish costs.
