Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Dec 17, 2012 6:03 pm Hi, I recently purchased a old brick Edwardian in Melbournes inner north (hasn't had any work done it since 1953). I settle in Feb and I have had access to the house to get builders (i need the bathroom redone) and underpinning/restumping tradies to do quotes. My question is, generally speaking when you re-stump old brick houses do you also need to underpin? I had a guy come in and quote $26k today he said I need to underpin the whole house then as we were walking out said I need to restump too (almost like it was an afterthought), where last week a builder gave me a ball park of 8k and just said I needed to underpin. I'm getting more quotes later in the week, would it be best to get a structural engineering report so at least when i speak to restumping specialists I can speak with some authority on what needs to be done? Any advice would be appreciated! Re: Restumping vs Underpinning - Brick House 2Dec 17, 2012 9:05 pm Kind of hard for any of us tradies or any other pro's in the building trade to comment without seeing photos of the problem. That being said though an engineers report wouldn't or shouldn't cost that much for them to give an assessment of the problem and how to rectify it.
