Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Oct 11, 2012 6:30 pm Hello, We are renovating our kitchen - yay! We have gutted the kitchen and removed all the old appliances. We will be installing new appliances including a new freestanding oven with a ceramic cooktop. We had an electrician come in the other day and install the new wiring for powerpoints etc. He said that the oven needs to have a special switch which should be clearly visible and accessible. Has anyone ever heard of this? Is it some sort of safety regulation? But I am interested in the answer re the switch as well. Why didn't the sparky put one in while he was there? We've gutted our kitchen so it's just the studs and the floorboards. It needs plasterboard going on before the electrician can install the powerpoints and switches. The more I think about this special switch the more I really don't want it. So that's why I'm trying to find out more about it. I'd really like to hear from someone who has heard of this before. I have included a snippet of the ASNZ3000 wiring rules relating to this for you .. 4.7 COOKING APPLIANCES 4.7.1 Switching device A circuit for a fixed or stationary cooking appliance having an open cooking surface incorporating electric heating elements, e.g. cooktop, deep fat fryer, barbecue griddle or similar, shall be provided with a switch, operating in all active conductors, mounted near the appliance in a visible and readily accessible position. Exception: Where an electric cooktop is installed in a public park or other open area, the required switch may be installed adjacent to the cooktop and, to prevent damage by vandalism, may be placed under a lockable cover that is located so that it is able to be operated as required for servicing and maintenance purposes of the cooktop. NOTES: 1 The switch should be mounted within two metres of the cooking appliance, but not on the cooking appliance, in such a position that the user does not have to reach across the open cooking surface. 2 A single switch is permissible for the control of associated cooking appliances in the same room. 3 It is recommended that switches, particularly those in domestic installations, be marked to identify the appliance controlled. 4 This requirement is not intended to apply to enclosed cooking appliances, such as built-in ovens and microwave ovens. Hope this helps. Re: Electrical installation of freestanding oven 8Oct 30, 2012 10:21 pm You really need an electrician for that. I'm all for DIY, but when it comes down to electrical work, if you need to ask the question you need the professional. It's illegal to do it yourself. Bathroom renovation will likely include a back-to-corner bath and we’re considering a freestanding tap with hand-held shower such as the picture included.
