Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Oct 03, 2012 4:28 pm Hi all. Firstly I am a rubbish handyman so forgive the dumb questions. I am getting my floors polished and in preparation need to remove some tiles, carpet and lino. I plan on starting to remove the tiles and lino this weekend. My questions are two fold: 1. How can I tell if the floor tiles or lino contain asbestos? 2. What can I do if they do, considering I dont have much time or budget? FYI I have an old house (50+ years) which still has an asbestos shed. Asbestos was also found in a wall when we did some reno work a few years back. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Underneath the lino, tiles and carpet exists a wooden floor. Merve. Re: Asbestos under lino or tiles? 2Oct 03, 2012 5:00 pm Hi Merve Any cement sheet underlay behind wall or floor tiles in a house of this age is likely to contain asbestos. Asbestos vinyl tiles are brittle in cold weather This will be a health hazard for you if you don't have audit and professional removal of asbestos products. A net surf of this company indicates they did put asbestos in the lino, but stopped some time ago. But my lino could very well be old enough. As for the tiles, I sincerely hope they are not asbestos, as I have been replacing them as they crack for the past two years, and would have a lung full of the stuff (and possibly my kids as well) if they are. It seems only an expert who can come to my house can resolve this? Re: Asbestos under lino or tiles? 4Oct 04, 2012 4:30 pm Yes that's the danger of renovating. Before you commence renovating always get expert opinion, it could save you lot more than money as you now realise. You must now proceed with caution. For your sake and your family members I hope this is false alarm. You dont say where you are so I guess its the yellow pages to find an asbestos tester in your area. Arfur Re: Asbestos under lino or tiles? 6Oct 05, 2012 2:17 pm Good advice from Arfur.
