Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Jul 28, 2012 6:38 pm I have a fairly boring kitchen. I want to change the layout a little but most of the cabinets are fine and would be OK provided that they had new doors and fronts to the drawers. Currently the cupboards are wood with a moulded plastic coating and there are a few rips, so they have to go. What I need is to have a new benchtop and hotplate; to change all of the doors and drawer fronts - and to have a new pantry built. Has anyone suggestions of where to go to get this done at the best price? I'm in Perth. Re: How to freshen up my kitchen 2Jul 29, 2012 6:11 pm Those vinyl-wrapped doors have a limited life. Any kitchen specialist would be able to retain the cupboard carcase, provided its sound and if you want to keep the current layout. Not being local I cant help you with a specific company and asking here may only get a respnse from a self-promoting 'questionable' joiner. Shop about, dont rush into it, visit their showrooms and get a few quotes as it wont be cheap and you want to get it right. Select your appliances before getting cupboard quotes so they know what they are dealing with Arfur Re: How to freshen up my kitchen 3Jul 29, 2012 10:10 pm So how long is "limited life" for vinyl wrapped doors. Given we had our for 8 1/2 years before selling and had no problems and they were still in perfect knick. So when should I expect a call from the new owner saying they have fallen apart? We bought a house to live in. The kitchen was huge and in the wrong room. It was about 5 yrs old. We just pulled it out. Moved the cabinets to another room and got a new benchtop. That has done us for 15 years. We are now getting a new one. There is still nothing wrong with the cabinets. You can buy doors from any kitchen supplier. Sorry don't know any in Perth. Then order a new benchtop. I've painted doors in one place for a quick update. Not sure how long it will last but 5 yrs would be great (it only cost me a tin of paint and $20 for handles. Looks great. The cabinets are the most expensive bit so if you can just rearrange that is a great option. Vinyl wrapped is generally regarded as cheap crap that you would get in a low-end Bunnings kitchen. There is no set life but with heavier use I have seen then deteriorate in 5 years, with corners peeling/lifting etc. Arfur Re: How to freshen up my kitchen 6Jul 31, 2012 5:41 pm I've decided to can the idea. I had a cabinetmaker in to quote for new doors, but he pointed out that as the sides to the cupboards were in pale grey melamine - it would be cheaper to build a whole new cabinet than replace the sides. Our kitchen is pale grey and I wanted cream coloured cupboards. He said he could replace the doors but we would have to match the existing pale grey so that the new doors fit in. If we actually replaced the cupboards, then the benchtop has to go - as do the tiles - and before you know it - the whole kitchen is replaced. Nothing is simple! I think we will just leave it as is. Thanks for all the suggestions. No. It's not original. Circa early to mid 90s would be my guess and maybe even as late as early 2000s 1 6631 2 4680 that will depend on the kitchen bench depth. you'll have to specify it so it allows for both the tap and the sink 1 7394 |
