Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Jun 21, 2012 10:08 pm I have a wood framed garage 6m x 7.2m that I want to convert to a Granny flat by fully lining with plasterboard. My first hurdle is the 7 roof trusses are spaced at 1200mm, I will need to reduce this span to 600mm to allow for ceiling plasterboard to be attached. There are probably a few ways to do this....my thoughts.... (1) Insert 6 new trusses between existing ones, suitably attached to the top plate etc...45*90 structural pine. (2) Install a number of large beams perpendicular to the trusses, these would need to be 7.2m long. Then install 6 rafters between the trusses resting on the top plates at each end and a suitable bracket connection to the beams above. Just need to know what would be best idea structurally and financially. Re: Garage conversion into Granny Flat 2Jun 22, 2012 11:14 am Most truss-roofed garages Ive seen lined had the ceiling attached to the roof purlins with trusses exposed, or in between the trusses. At times the purlins were battened out to hide any unevenness. I think a major thing you may have overlooked is the floor. Has it a plastic membrane to stop dampness? Most garages arent and you may have to look at this first or you could end up with a damp, cold and unhealthy room Arfur Re: Garage conversion into Granny Flat 3Jun 22, 2012 4:18 pm Uncle Arfur I think a major thing you may have overlooked is the floor. Has it a plastic membrane to stop dampness? Most garages arent and you may have to look at this first or you could end up with a damp, cold and unhealthy room Which would also be illegal. Not always as simple as lining a roof. It needs to be regulated height, width from the perimeter, floors etc. Re: Garage conversion into Granny Flat 4Jun 22, 2012 11:46 pm travelbug width from the perimeter Please explain? Height I agree with, hence fixing ceilings between the trusses, and IF you mean width, that appears to be 6m Arfur I would suggest you simply go and talk to council about your proposal, most councils are getting onboard with ancillary dwellings.
