Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 May 26, 2012 10:22 pm I am renovating a turn of the century workers cottage and have been excited about what i thought was an art nouveau Australian themed tin pressed ceiling. Today I discovered its not metal at all, but instead appears to be made of plaster. Can anyone tell me what this is about? Was this common? Was this the more affordable option to pressed tin? I think the house was built around 1905 and its in Melbourne. thanks Re: pressed ceiling - art nouveau 2May 27, 2012 4:49 pm Cant say Ive ever seen plaster ceilings that resemble the old pressed tin style. Can you post some pictures? Arfur Re: pressed ceiling - art nouveau 4Jun 10, 2012 4:53 pm One of the houses on The Block in South Melbourne had a big ceiling rose made out of plaster so I imagine doing a whole ceiling might have been possible. Look at Ian Evans' books on old Australian houses - local library. He might mention them. http://demolition-exeter.blogspot.com.a ... s-iii.html - this is English but it shows it's possible. Ask at Schotts??? Re: pressed ceiling - art nouveau 5Jun 11, 2012 9:18 am JacC The ceiling piece is just one piece (with light fitting in the middle) andabout 2 metres long and 1 metre wide. Do you know how to post photos here? Sounds like a large plaster rose, many are still available Do a search on posting photos there are detailed instructions Re: pressed ceiling - art nouveau 6Jun 11, 2012 11:37 am Now it becomes clear. As the other poster said they are large ceiling roses that were popular many years ago and were dispensed with when people went for less ornate ceilings with less mouldings and smaller cornices Arfur Hello!
