Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 May 25, 2012 12:26 pm Hi guys I have a huge retaining wall behind the house. About 3.5m high and 14m in length. Its made out of those 1m long limestone blocks. Not too sure if they are natural limestone or reconstituted ones.. It separates my block from my neighbours on top block. I would leave it as it as is if it was not so ugly made =( Different size blocks (full lengths and cuts), uneven gaps etc. I had a guy that does plastering to check it out (was doing the front of a house render on bricks). Bad news =( He said it is do-able, but will not last long, as he doubts that the builders properly sealed the blocks on the other side =( So far I have considered the following: 1. Fill the gaps etc and apply a skim coat of bondcrete+limestone+sand just to make it look even without seeing joints 2. Attach chicken wire type thing (don't know what is the proper name), like a mesh, and render on top 3. Built a frame in front of it with a gap in between the wall out of wood and blueboard and render/paint that and... thats it. Cannot think of anything else. Oh, yeah 4. render it normally, and sell the house in the next 2 years Does anyone have any other ideas? So far only the first idea is cheap enough to do. But price aside, would like to see what other people did with those walls? Thank you Re: 3m high retaining wall - what can be done? 2May 25, 2012 12:49 pm Have you thought about growing a creeper on some mesh, over it? I think you would have the same with building a 'frame in front of it with a gap in between the wall etc...' There are spiders everywhere, but its not like you are going to lay on it. Are you spider-phobic? When I replaced my old timber framed windows with aluminium ones, I was amazed to see their webs all along the cavity walls. Not sure on price but having water storage tanks as part of it is a nice plus. Thank you again Simeon.. I will call my certifier for that.
