Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 May 08, 2012 2:19 pm Hi everyone, I am in the process of getting quotes from builders for the installation of 2x supporting beams, prior to the the walls. Federation, double brick home in North Strathfield, Sydney. The two jobs include: 1) Install supporting beam in (load bearing) wall - loung/dining. We have the structural engineer certs, need the builder to install the beam, we will do the rest. For this wall, we will cut a lookthrough between the two rooms, so not a complete removal of the wall. 2) Install supporting mean in (load bearing) wall - bathroom. We will move the wall - so just need the builder to install the supporting beam, we will remove the wall and rebuild the new wall. We are wondering how long this might take a builder to complete, to ensure the quotes we have received are valid. We expect it would take 1-2 days per beam maximum, one builder quoted 7 days. I'm wondering if anyone can provide any experience in this area. Most builders hourly rate comes back at around $50-55 per hour. Is this a standard rate? Thanks in advance! Sounds awfully low considering plumbers charge almost twice that. A day to prop and prepare opening in solid brick, half day to fit steel and prestress the load and final half day to pack withepnsion grout and remove props @builderforlife Building inspector and passionate about construction When you need an expert to take a look. Re: Experience in installation of a new steel supporting bea 4May 09, 2012 7:17 am Hi builderforlife, Looking at the process you have outlined, we were wondering whether beam was placed prior to any work being done on the wall. Because we will remove/move the wall ourselves (including a friend who is a concrete cutter), or is this something the build would do within the two days? We had estimated about 2 days per wall for the builder, so seems we were accurate. Thanks for your input. We will hopefully have a builder come in to quote soon.
