They have told us it requires a waterproof membrane under the slab. We dug under it and cant see any plastic sheeting. Is there anyway to put one up or do anything to fix this?? Its the only thing hold us back! Re: Water proof membranes under slabs? 2May 07, 2012 8:25 pm No way to get under now, but you could put one on top and then batten and lay a timber floor? It will be expensive however. @builderforlife Building inspector and passionate about construction When you need an expert to take a look. Re: Water proof membranes under slabs? 3May 08, 2012 4:45 pm There are various chemical treatments that can be applied to the slab surface to act as a moisture barrier and negate the requirement for a plastic membrane, however it is entirely up to your Council as to whether they will accept such a proposal as an alternative solution. You would likely need a local engineer or appropriately qualified waterproofing expert to provide a written specification for such chemical treatment, including certification that the proposed alternative solution will satisfy the relevant performance requirements of the Building Code of Australia. Otherwise as builderforlife says, you could lay a timber floor over waterproofing membrane. You'd need to make sure that this membrane extended under the walls also though to prevent rising damp. Have look at your house plans and you will probably find that brick articulation joint has been missed.
