Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Apr 12, 2012 9:39 pm Hi guys, i have a quick question, i am extending my home as well as relocating the garage making it attached to the house.. i am getting plans drawn up etc... i want to know if i need a surveyor to mark out (or peg out) where the footings go? or can the builder do it and use the current building as a reference? i understand that if it was just land, and no buildings, then a surveyor may be needed, but if there is an existing building already there, why couldnt i even mark it out? the draftsman said he will give us a set-out plan for the builder which will tell him where to start and he will use the dimensioned floor plans from there to set out the building footprint. any suggestions? Re: home extension. Who marks out where the footings go? 2Apr 12, 2012 9:46 pm I did a similar thing, extending my house out the back and moving the carport (and turning it into a garage), and I just did the set-out myself. When council came out to do the pre-inspection before the new footings were poured he brought a tape measure and checked all my measurements (mainly distances to boundaries) and then approved it without any problems. They do most site ets outs and are very familiar with plans. @builderforlife Building inspector and passionate about construction When you need an expert to take a look.
