Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Mar 19, 2012 12:19 am Hi everyone I'm new to this forum but looks like a great place to discuss home renos. In the last 2 months I bought my first house, got married, and then bought a second house. So it's been a busy couple of months. The first property is a queenslander/workers cottage style house (vj walls, 2.9m high ceilings, etc...) on a 809m2 block in Salisbury (about 9k's from Brisbane city - not flood affected and in a quiet street). The house is in need of renovation. So far I've ripped up the carpet, drum sanded the hoop pine and hardwood floors and sealed them. I've also ripped off the crappy ply wood sheeting that was over the vj walls and sanded, gap filled, and undercoated the vj walls in half the house. I've just started on the skirting boards and the architraves. The plan over the next year is to raise it, build in underneath, put a wrap around deck on it, and do extensive and quality DIY renovations. The house I bought 2 days ago is a postwar house that is on a 1580m2 block that backs onto my first house. It's got polished wooden floors, but doesn't look great because the owner died before finishing the wall sheeting, etc... so it's not pretty right now. It also has a granny flat that is partly completed out the back, and a garage that is similar to the granny flat which we will be converting into a 2nd granny flat. The first property we got for $412 000. The second one we got as a distressed sale from the bank at auction for $370 000. The only reason we bought the second one was because it was extremely cheap. 9k's from the city, in a quiet street, less than a 10 min walk to the train, 25 min walk to the university, and 1580m2! We are going to rent the second place out with the 2 flats at the back after we renovate it over the next 2-3 months. Then we are going to cut the back 780m2 off the back of the block and add it to our current 809m2 block so we have a huge block of land with our nice renovated character house. I'm lucky enough to have a dad that has done all of this many times before with the property he has owned. I'm also lucky enough to have 3 electricians in the family I've worked as a labourer on lots of building sites while I did my psych degree at university, so I have a bit of experience with contruction. So yeah, lots of work to be done. But it's a very exciting time. I get a kick out of renovating and really like the before and afters. I'm pretty keen to maybe start a blog or share some pics on here and get some feedback and to also see what projects you're all doing. Re: Massive Home Renovation Brisbane 7Mar 25, 2012 7:12 pm Thanks. Most of the house is hoop pine. But 8m of it was eaten out by termites a long time ago so I replaced those boards with new hoop pine today. Now it's the task of finding a stain that matches the 80-100 year old hoop pine around it. Replacing boards was surprisingly easy though, managed to get it all done while my wife went to the market in the morning with her friend. To be honest I'd prefer to renovate than go to the market... I've already sanded down and finished the rest of the hoop pine flooring, boy that was a big job, those boards were in very bad condition.
