Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Mar 02, 2012 8:20 pm Hi, We are currently living in a home that is 12 years old. It was originally a model home, so it has oak trim throughout the entire home (handrails, window sills, etc...) I was told by a friend that oak trim is out of style now and that I should paint over the wood trim to give the home a more modern feel. I would like to know if painting the wood trim would help or hurt resale value. Re: please help about Home renovation? 2Mar 03, 2012 12:58 pm I suggest Oak trim would be rare now and may be a good selling point to make your place standout from the rest for buyers who like the sight of timber. Painting over it may make it look 'more modern' and look the same as every other boring place, but would lose that sale. Take care not to damage it and you'll be able to re sell it for a good amount. Painting will just destroy its value. Re: please help about Home renovation? 4Mar 22, 2012 7:50 am I see a lot of homes at pre purchase inspections and timber trims are rare in newer homes.Your entire home design is a reflection of the period it was built in not just the trim. It should be appreciated in its entirety. Timber is rarely used now because it is expensive and I would suggest it is a display home feature that will add more value to your home if its not painted. But as far as making things modern... I'm not a fan. Modern = cheap, no character, plaster and chipboard crap with the lack of creativeness that gives rise to only 3 colour choices of black, silver and white.
