Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Feb 15, 2012 1:10 pm Hi All, I'm in the process of renovating my kitchen. Existing powerpoints were 295mm from benchtop. The people who installed the splashback have moved the powerpoint to 95mm from benchtop and 60mm across from back of gas cook top. Can anyone please let me know if this is okay/within regulations or if not, what the measurement requirements are. It looks awfully close to the back burner... Thanks. Annie Re: Powerpoint regulations - distance from gas cooktop 2Feb 16, 2012 5:04 am I'm no sparky but they seem awfully low to the benchtop and I think at 60mm from a cooktop they might be affected by steam. If your post doesn't attract a sparky you might best check out the electrical code pertaining to your area or simply phone another electrician. What intrigues me most is WHY were they shifted? I strongly suggest NOT paying anything until this matter is sorted Arfur Re: Powerpoint regulations - distance from gas cooktop 3Mar 02, 2012 12:02 am After a quick flick through the 'wiring rules' I can find a reference to another 4 standards, but nothing in the AS/NZS 3000:2007A1 that would directly rule it out, indirectly I would be worried about the heat damaging the power point making it unsafe, which would mean the sparky failed to provide protection from damage, it just sounds wrong, and as they said at trade school, if it sounds wrong it probably is! I would reject the new locations from the splashback people, saying you didn't ask for the power points to move and moving them now makes a hassle of how does the sparky disconnect the old, unless the wires reach the new location and are already hanging out! You could possibly say the sparky won't instal in new location, but you would need a local sparky to refer them to. You could also try ringing the local governing body, I have been told that energy safe Victoria (the governing body of gas and electricity in Vic) are happy to talk and clarify rules, if you can convince them you only want info and not planning on doing the work yourself! If you don't want to annoy the neighbours then simply get yourself some good head phones. For me the sound is much better using headphones.
