Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Jan 17, 2012 11:08 am Hi all, Please let me know if I've posted in the wrong place as I'm new but I am struggling to find any renovators for a tatami floor, preferably platformed, to segregate a sleeping area in a studio. The current floor is just normal kitchen tiles. Can anyone please advise where I can find someone? I've already tried googling but haven't got any results. Re: Tatami Flooring Platform renovation 2Jan 17, 2012 3:17 pm Hi lilmeh I would recommend first calculating the area you need / want for your platform bed. Then you can look for a tatami supplier, and order the tatami separately (but remember that tatami is traditionally constructed using standard sizes, which may affect the size of your bed). Then hire a contractor / carpenter / cabinetmaker to design and construct the platform to your requirements, incorporating the tatami. Some possible tatami suppliers, depending on what state you are in: Japanache: http://www.japanache.com.au/contents/en-us/d80.html Zentai Living: http://store.zentai.com.au/categories/Tatami/ The Japanese Shoji and Tatami Company: http://www.shoji-tatami.com.au/index.php?page=home Or contact the Shizuka Ryokan (located in Hepburn Springs, Vic) and ask them where they ordered their tatami from. Best of luck, finella Re: Tatami Flooring Platform renovation 3Feb 09, 2012 1:27 pm I think "finella" has already listed all major suppliers in Australia... One thing to look out for is the actually quality and thickness of the Tatami mats, so compare these when getting quotes! I have some from Zentai (listed above), and their mats weigh around 27-28 kgs per full size mat, whereas I've heard that the ones from Japanache are a lot lighter at around 20 kgs/mat. This will give them less durability, and they might even sag in sections where you put the most weight on. Zentai are getting their mats directly, and they assured me that theirs are NOT being fumigated when entering the country, but heat treated instead — another thing to look out for or ask for, since you will be sleeping on them...
