Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Jan 13, 2012 10:11 pm Hi, I am new to the site and new to the renovation game. I recently bought a propoerty that we intend on extending. However given its a double brick house with lots of load bearing walls, I need a structural engineer to identify which a load bearing and which can come down without an issue. Does anyone know of a good structural engineer that can do this simple task. Also has anybody had a good experience with an architect that is willing to do a house extension out the back. I am in the Lower North Shore of Sydney Any assistance is welcome. We're currently undertaking a major renovation, also on the Lower North Shore (I've got a thread running on here, which I'll update in the next week or so with the latest). Having never gone through it before, it was a bit daunting in regards to architects, costs, structural issues, etc. Having tried a couple of architects we weren't happy with, our eventual solution was to look around at other developments locally that we liked, then looked up the council website to see who the architect was. We ended up finding a great architect, who was on our wavelength and kept costs in mind. Our architect already knew a good structural engineer who did a lot of work on making sure our house was sound: we ended up with underpinning and steel beams. I wouldn't worry too much about supporting walls: we removed a lot of supporting walls as part of the renovation. Anyway, let the architect worry about that: my suggestion would be to look around and interview a few architects first. Good luck. 3 6389 The engineering is the engineering.
