Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Oct 22, 2011 8:58 pm Hi folks We are thinking of pushing out our back wall by a metre or two. We currently have floorboards that run vertical to the back wall we want pushed out (is vertical the correct term? As in, they don't run parallel to the back wall but run into it. So, we would need to put a join in the floorboards but am hoping to avoid that look that screams 'extension' (the look of having one long piece of timber that runs across the width of the room, then adding the new boards on to the back of that). Is there any way to avoid this? I am thinking we could pull up every second board back to a different point and relay different length so that the joins are up and down and not in one straight line (is that making any sense?). Any suggestions?? I don't mind if it doesn't have to have the strip going across ways (and the new boards just butt up to the existing in one line because that is less noticable)... but most extensions or new rooms seem to have these wide strips to separate the old from new (just saw a post in here that had something similar). We even have one in the doorway of our living room to our kitchen, but in a doorway, not so noticeable. One or two metres in from the back door of our main dining/family room - would stand out like......well, you know . Thanks for any tips or suggestions. HHCIB Oh, and PS, would we then need to re-sand and restain the entire floor to match the staining etc, or can they generally match the old to the new with just a bit of a 'buffer' zone?? This question also applies to a small area in our loungeroom where we want to pull up the boards and tiling on the floor surrounding the fire place - but not if it means resanding the entire floor Re: Joining floorboards for an extension 2Oct 23, 2011 11:59 am In our extension they just butted the boards up against the old ones (we have narrow boards however so we had to have them especially milled - if that is the correct word - for us. Although where they meet the old boards in this particular part it is only a door way wide. In the other room they pulled up every second and matched them in like you are thinking and you can't tell the difference. In the doorway thou the sanders couldn't just sand and blend the old and new in so they have only gone as far as the doorway and until I get the other part of the house sanded it screams extension ! Re: Joining floorboards for an extension 3Oct 23, 2011 8:47 pm Thanks Mrsjt.... I appreciate your info - that's helped give me an insight. For the record, I don't mind if the timber buts up against each other if that is the compromise, I just don't want 'that strip' that they sometimes put where the join is going across the boards (ie in the other other direction) and then continue the timber on the other side of that. But sounds to me like pulling up every second board to break up the continuous line is the way to go... if we can. Bugger about the boards all having to be re-done. (I wonder if anyone else can shed light on this one). But at the same time, when I think about it, we will probably be moving things around and ultimately need them all to be re-done (and gives me the chance to go darker as I would like ). Thanks again.... (still appreciate any other feedback).
