Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Sep 05, 2011 10:54 pm Im thinking of renovating my bedroom the bedroom has a fireplace and the ceiling is twice as high as regular ceilings. I want to build two wardrobes either side of the fire place but unsure wether to build up to the ceiling and how many doors etc so it looks good. Regular ceilings are at a minimum 8 feet high - are your ceilings really 16 feet high?? Re: Built in wardrobes in high ceiling room 3Sep 06, 2011 9:25 am As a renovator of many old homes I have come across this need more than once. There are 3 ways to solve the problem. 1. If the fire place is no longer in use and not there for decorative reasons you can robe right over it. You can get your cabinet maker to install 2 full height robes on either side of the fire place and then put a false panel over the chimney area. The end result looks like a robe from wall to wall, but in reality it is just a robe either side. 2. You could build right up to the ceiling and put cornice across the top of the robe panel 3. You could stop short of the ceiling and have that dust collecting space on top Re: Built in wardrobes in high ceiling room 4Sep 07, 2011 6:04 pm Helyn Quote: and the ceiling is twice as high as regular ceilings Could you be more specific - how high exactly are your ceilings? I think you should definitely keep the fireplace. I like to fill all the way to the ceiling. Either put in wardrobe doors to standard height - say 9 feet- and then put another smaller cupboard on top (Need a step ladder but provides critical extra storage for suitcases + stuff that's rarely used) OR build high wardrobes & then box in a bulkhead to the ceiling. this looks much better IMO than leaving a gap for dust to collect. Re: Built in wardrobes in high ceiling room 6Sep 08, 2011 6:40 pm I agree with xquisite, it not only looks great to have them go all the way but you can never have enough storage. Beside, if you finish them short of the ceiling, they really do become dust collectors. I'm thinking I might go the 9ft and then just gyprock the top. And fo rthe fireplace i think i might leave open on the odd chance i can find a heater that i can put inthere as our winters do get cold It will be neat but you won't have much freeboard.
