Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Jul 25, 2011 8:08 pm Hi, i have been renovating my old 1940's weatherboard place in melbourne, at the very beginning of the process we got the place reblocked and levelled as the old stumps were well past it. all the plaster and and walls survived unscathed but the shifting of the floor broke a lot of tiles. the place is tiled thoughout the entrance hall, the bathroom and the kitchen. to add to this when we took the bath out of the bathroom to install a shower we found that the some origional boards had rotted away, taking half the bathroom floor and some of the kitchen, requiring a rebuild. the place was last renovated in the early 80's we think, (there was a lot of wood panelling around). The problem now is that it is proving impossible to match the original tiles, there are a rustic shape and kind of a gold/coffee colour, 200x200. i was thinking of ripping them all out and staring over but found that the tiles are sitting on pretty much reinforced concrete. so i am looking for ideas on how to, either find matching tiles or how best to approach this problem. My initial thought is to rip out the remaining bathroom tiles and use them to fix the remainder of the house, starting fresh in the bathroom. has anyone else encountered such an issue? any help greatly appreciated. I would just get rid of them and start again. Go to Bunnings & get an ozito hammer drill with the wide blade attachment - and a dust mask! Re: old tiles!! bah 3Jul 28, 2011 9:15 am There are specialist tiles companies out there that match tiles, no matter how old or obscure the type. Ive done a few heritage renovation jobs where the origional tiles were sourced, matched and put back in to match the origional existing ones. Google....Matching old tiles. There is definately a warehouse in perth that does it....not sure where you are. Pat. Re: old tiles!! bah 4Jul 28, 2011 1:13 pm Hello, thanks for the help, i'm in melbourne and thus far have had very little luck locating the tiles. the tiler i have gone with to fix up the obvious things reckons he should be able to find tiles to match. the tiled section of the house is like this, joists and boards, layer of plastic, some cement, some reinforcing wire, some more cement then the tiles on top. there is about 10-15 mil of cement?concrete? (not a builder) under the tiles. the exposed tiles come out pretty easily, but cleaning the dirt and dust up is a major hassle. Cheers!
