Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Jul 14, 2011 1:01 pm Hey guys, I have a 33.5 sq porterdavis built house which is about 7 years old now. my family has grown and i need more space but i donot want to build a new house as i dont want to leave the estate iam at right now. Iam wondering if its possible to build a double storey on my single storey, maybe an extra 10 - 12 sq of living space. I need 2 extra bedrooms, Home thetre room and a games area is what iam thinking. Is it possible to build a double storey in to an existing single storey and what kind of costs am i looking at? Anyone know any consturction companies that specialise in this? Hope to hear from you. Cheers! Re: Extending a single storey to a double possible? 2Jul 15, 2011 9:33 am mr.georgethomas2010 .... Is it possible to build a double storey in to an existing single storey and what kind of costs am i looking at? Hi, I am not an expert at all but few years ago I asked few builders in my area exact same question. The answer was something like this: 1) Is it possible? Everything is possible as long as you are happy to pay for it. 2) What kind of costs? Very expensive. 2-3 times more than the cost of construction of new house. I was told that It will be cheaper to build brand new 30sq house than to try add 15sq top floor. Good luck Re: Extending a single storey to a double possible? 3Jul 15, 2011 9:48 am Single story houses are always over dimensioned. They are dimensioned to be able to hold another story above. Re cost it will always cost more per square than a new house. Not only is it less efficient(cost per square) to build a smaller house however you will have added complexities. Re: Extending a single storey to a double possible? 4Jul 15, 2011 8:06 pm We are looking to demolish the old extension to our house (about 2 squares) and add 15 squares over two stories to make a total of about 25 squares. This will cost about $400k. Realistically, I doubt you could add a second storey for less than $200k Interestingly, we think that will make our house huge for 5 of us plus extended in law stays, but it will still be smaller than what you already have.....
