Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Sep 06, 2011 5:57 am My wife and I want a decking and pergola built at our house. My wife seems to thing that they need to be done together, rather than decking first, then pergola done at a later stage, as it might look crap. Is it advisable to get both done at the same time, or is it quite okay to get them done separately? Re: Building decking/pergola serparately or at same time? 2Sep 06, 2011 9:01 am Well if your decking is a integral part of your pergola and funds permit I would do them both at the same time. If not, plan very carefully for the deck and pt the pergola up first. Do not under estimate how LONG it takes to lay the decking. Re: Building decking/pergola serparately or at same time? 3Sep 07, 2011 12:07 pm McLovin - it is better to build them at the same time to achieve the seamless look. The outside timber posts to which the decking bearers and joists are attached should be extended to full height so that they can form the basis of your pergola. Then you deck around them. Otherwise, you will have to put posts in later that are outside of the decking area, or you will have to remove some decking and modify the substructure. You cannot simply bolt pergola posts down into decking etc. I doubt that the council would allow this. Of course, it had to do with span and weight etc, but in SA, most councils will required pergola footings of around 400x400x600 deep for pergola posts. Even if you don't want the pergola roof done at the same time, at least consider extending the post through and putting sail or something there in the mean time, so that it can easily be added later. Hi, as per the subject. Does anyone have any recommendations for the best value decking oil (Bunning is close to where I live) for a treated pine deck? Thanks 0 13480 Is there a building permit?
