Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Jun 17, 2011 7:40 pm Hi I am in the Melton council in VIC I dont know if the answers to these questions are council dependant.... First of all, can you run an accounting business from your home with no permits? Secondly, they have just turned their garage into an office for business. They had an existing toilet and sink in the garage when they built the house. However in the space of a day they have removed the garage door and put up a wall with entry door and window. It drives us and the other neighbours crazy that they run their business from home. There are always randoms turning up late into the night and top top it off they park on the nature strips. As you all know building and owning a new home is such a proud time that this just p***es us off!!!! Thanks for your advise. Kate Re: business from home and office garage 2Jun 17, 2011 8:53 pm Kateypink different councils in different parts of australia have differing rules and it will alos depend on their zoning. They may well jsut be hoping no one will dob them in or may well be allowed to do so. Phone your local council and check on the regs. . Here as long as no one who is employed in the business lives off site you can run a business from home. Assuming its a quiet type business. Re: business from home and office garage 3Jun 17, 2011 9:23 pm For where I am, changing the garage door to a wall/window/entry door changes the 'landscape' of the street and would need council consent There are a couple of houses nearby that from the street look like normal garages. The garage door is in place and opens to a shallow storage area as a wall has been created giving over the rest of the old garage to internal house space. Re: business from home and office garage 4Jun 18, 2011 2:31 pm I thought that it is ok to have a work from home business on the condition that you don't have clients come to your house - I am a mortgage broker and work from home but never have a client here. Otherwise an approval would have to be granted. Being your next door neighbours, you'd be sent a development proposal notice from council with the opportunity to object. Not having sufficient parking should be enough for the council to reject their application. If I were you, I'd anonymously contact the council to ask if a home business is allowed and make sure you have lots of photos showing the cars parked on the nature strip. Once people know they are being watched, cars tend to mysteriously disappear or signage is removed. Best of luck! I worked from home as a Remedial Therapist when in Brisbane and I didn't need a permit, but I still had to abide by certain rules - had to have enough off street parking for clients, couldn't have more than 1 client on the premises at once, couldn't work on a Sunday/late nights and couldn't have signage bigger than A5 on the premises. Our neighbours were aware that I worked from home and I made it quite clear what I did (as in therapeutic massage - not red light massage ) and I was always considerate of my neighbours and ensured that no clients ever interrupted their peace. ~ trying to build our dream home by the sea ~ My home office is hot with computer equipment running virtually 18 hours a day.
