Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Apr 06, 2011 6:49 am We are in the process of selecting a builder and we are about to start ringing the builders references for houses he has just worked on. So we need to come up with a list of questions to ask each reference. What did you ask? So far we have: Was he easy to deal with? How was he when you ask for something to be changed? Did you find many defects and if so what was the reaction when they were pointed out? What else is there?? Re: Questions to ask builders references 2Apr 06, 2011 10:42 am Ask if he worked on site, ask if he runs a clean building site (not sure if it is a reno or new build?) Does he use reliable subbies. There will be changes (variations) so don't stress to much about that. Good luck! Re: Questions to ask builders references 4Apr 06, 2011 12:20 pm The best question is to simply say 'Tell me about your renovation, good and bad". I have reviewed lots of surveys and its interesting that you get a lot more from this sort of question than asking a lot of tick the box type questions The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: Questions to ask builders references 6Apr 10, 2011 6:59 pm Was the job completed on time, was the work going on most days or did you have days at a time when nobody turned up. Did the council or neighbours have any issues with him or the tradies (building materials/rubbish left on footpath, parking issues, radio on full volume etc. They sound like small issues and they are but you have to live with your neighbours long after the builders have gone, you want a builder who is considerate of your neighbours and if there's an issue will work to solve it not ignore or abuse them) Re: Questions to ask builders references 7Apr 10, 2011 9:15 pm ~steph~ We are in the process of selecting a builder and we are about to start ringing the builders references for houses he has just worked on. What else is there?? get the builders registration number and check if they are a member of the HIA, then have a coffee with them and see how you feel about them, if you have a good gut feeling about them then you should look at their previous jobs. Re: Questions to ask builders references 8Apr 11, 2011 1:59 pm We had our lawyer check our builder when we did our renovation to check he was solvent, not in any financial difficulty, also his building company was registered appropriately etc, then it was up to us. I went on my gut feeling also when I meet him and discussed the project. He was very fussy about checking exactly what I wanted. He wanted the work, and was very quick with any replys to questions I had either in person or via email. I am very happy Ardo That is so funny! I wonder how many people know who Larry Haun is these days.
