Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Apr 05, 2011 11:20 pm Hi all, I've just bought my first apartment and take possession very soon. The bathroom needs some work, unfortunately. This is what I want done: * Remove existing wall & floor tiles, * Remove & replace existing toilet, * Remove and replace existing vanity & tap/mixer, * Remove existing bath * Lay new bluestone floor tiles (fall to outlet - ideally to a new linear drain), * Tile 1 wall using 100x250 ceramic tiles, * Tile other wall using coloured mosaic wall tiles, * Install new frameless toughened glass shower screen. The screen will be approx 800mm x 1800mm high. I’m on a really limited budget, so I have tried to keep things as simple as possible. To aid this, I’ve sourced the wall tiles, bluestone, toilet, vanity and all fixtures. All I need is someone to demo, patch (where required), tile and install WC/vanity/tapware. I do not know who I'd contact to get these works done (I'm in Melbourne) and I'd really appreciate any advice. A tiler wouldn't be able to do all of the work, I'm assuming. Almost need a bathroom contractor, if one exists... Thanks for any help. Simon. Re: Small bathrrom reno, advice would be great! 2Apr 07, 2011 9:09 pm I think I’d contract a builder to do this work for you. Get some quotes. Im not sure how handy you are or how much you are prepared to do but here is some hot tips.... If you are in an old 1970s 1980s apartment building the waste pipes for your shower and bath may go through the floor and into the apartment below. This means that when YOU remove the bath be carefull not to push the pipework through, onto your down stairs neighbours bath or you may be renovating two bathrooms. If you have an apartment above you look on the roof of your bathroom, if you see pipes coming through then your place will be the same below you. Because your on a budget do not re-arrange where your fixtures are going to be...leave your shower where it is. Leave the location of your vanity where it is. If you do this then you only need to get your plumber to "Disconnect" the plumbing, that way you can remove the shower, bath and toilet yourself . Just make sure you plug up the pipe from the toilet or you will get the smells coming through the house.....not good. Put in your own vanity then get the plumber to connect everything up. Have a go at tiling and dont be a checkbook renovator. Practice tiling on timber first ...go and do a course at "bunno's" or your local training institution because what you learn you will take with you to every place you move to in the future. You can demo, you can patch and you can tile but thats if you are on a really tight budget and have the confidence to have a go. Give it a go...
